High School and Male Eating Disorders

High school seems to really be affected by eating disorders.  During high school teens begin to feel pressured about losing weight.  Females aren’t the only ones facing this pressure as males are also teased for being either too big or too small.  Sports can also play a role in eating disorders for males as they must make weight or lose weight in order to be fast enough.  High school’s should be concerned by this problem because eating disorders may lead to even bigger problems like self-harm and even death.  An interesting example of a male teen suffering from a eating disorder in high school is from the film “Starving in Suburbia.”  The teen begins suffering from anorexia because of the pressure from his father to lose weight for wrestling.  Although his sister is suffering from the same disease and the parents are aware of the symptoms, they look the other way when the brother exhibits the same behavior.

  1. I never thought of men going through eating disorders because I guess I have not met a guy that seemed to go through it. Even when I did have some friends in high school who would limit there eating to make their weight group, they never went as far as becoming bulimic or anorexic. I like your example from the movie since high school is a difficult time for individuals to struggle with their appearance. Since either do not want to speak about their eating habits or simple do not consider it as a health issue, it makes this problem worse because it restricts men from getting help. So boys in high school should speak up, such as you explain in your steps to help, to prevent health troubles.

  2. While I've known about men being able to experience eating disorders I've always thought they were in relatively low numbers when compared to girls. However, society puts stigma on weight in different ways for boys and girls. As you stated above, boys are often pressured to stay a certain weight because of sports or because they're too big/small. If a boy is too skinny then he's seen as "wimpy" or "weak" and so they might try to gain weight or muscle. If a boy is too big then his weight will most likely become the butt of a joke among other teen boys which may lead him to try to lose weight as quickly as possible or through unhealthy means. While these are just hypothetical situations they are still plausible as I've seen part of these in real life. Peer pressure or bullying affects teens greatly and it's honestly terrible seeing people starving themselves or otherwise in order to achieve the so called "perfect body".

  3. I always felt that the societal pressures that are applied to men are often looked over and are seen as not a issue. The example of high school is a great place to shine a light on the struggles men face in fitting to what society has deemed necessary and important in regards to looks. Another great point brought up was that the pressures does not have to come just from ones peers, but also family too. The example of the dad forcing his son to loose weight for wrestling is a great example of how the causes of self loathing can come from a variety of places.

  4. Irrespective of receiving daily oral or future injectable depot therapies, these require health care visits for medication and monitoring of safety and response. If patients are treated early enough, before a lot of immune system damage has occurred, life expectancy is close to normal, as long as they remain on successful treatment. However, when patients stop therapy, virus rebounds to high levels in most patients, sometimes associated with severe illness because i have gone through this and even an increased risk of death. The aim of “cure”is ongoing but i still do believe my government made millions of ARV drugs instead of finding a cure. for ongoing therapy and monitoring. ARV alone cannot cure HIV as among the cells that are infected are very long-living CD4 memory cells and possibly other cells that act as long-term reservoirs. HIV can hide in these cells without being detected by the body’s immune system. Therefore even when ART completely blocks subsequent rounds of infection of cells, reservoirs that have been infected before therapy initiation persist and from these reservoirs HIV rebounds if therapy is stopped. “Cure” could either mean an eradication cure, which means to completely rid the body of reservoir virus or a functional HIV cure, where HIV may remain in reservoir cells but rebound to high levels is prevented after therapy interruption.Dr Itua Herbal Medicine makes me believes there is a hope for people suffering from,Parkinson's disease,Schizophrenia,Lung Cancer,Breast Cancer,Lupus,Lymne Disease,psoriasis,Colo-Rectal Cancer,Blood Cancer,Prostate Cancer, siva.Fatal Familial Insomnia Factor V Leiden Mutation ,Epilepsy Dupuytren's disease,Desmoplastic small-round-cell tumor Diabetes ,Coeliac disease,Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease,Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy, Ataxia,Arthritis,Amyotrophic Lateral Scoliosis,Brain Tumor,Fibromyalgia,Fluoroquinolone Toxicity
